after going to the akira talk a while back at the NGV, a few things to share:
he's now part of the australia post australian legends.
akira had us won over completely - he presents as an incredibly down to earth, practical kinda guy who has worked incredibly hard to get where he is, and has a child like sense of wonder in what he does. the stories of going into thrift stores for inspiration, and the oft repeated red socks (the .pdf is highly recommended reading c/o marion hume, who has a fashionista stylee book out) were interesting enough, but we thought that the questions to akira were kinda lacking. here's what we would have asked him about:
- his take on florence broadhurst (more about florence) whose designs he's used.
- how close is he to his blood type personality?
- what's his wardrobe like?
- what's his advice to australian men when it comes to fashion?
well, we were wondering how the heck they made a buck and could afford to provide services...now we know. meetup are now charging their users. interesting to see what this is going to mean to small craftin' communities that use the service.
spotted at an impromptu colinette get together at the handknitters guild last week c/o sarah durrant - the toast and marmalade crocheted throw. (it's the big pic at the top). we can't really justify buying colinette yarns for a throw. they're expensive luscious things, so creating something out of it that animals will probably sit on, that's going to be a total beast to clean ain't our idea of fun.
as a substitute option, good ol' bendigo woollen mills sent their shade card, and we're looking forward to paying them a visit next weekend. we're planning on buying for "nordic memories" (about halfway down...) but we're not so sure about the design now - if it's chopping a tall thin model into chunks...then we're a tad hesitant. the plan is to have a knockabout jumper for winter (time to get to work!) so any other bright ideas, do send 'em our way.
an unedited email forward...(we do like their stuff, a lot...)

we're still in the ice ages here (read a very old laptop...), but we can wish for the day that we have a shiny new(er) computer and an ipod so we can listen it to knitting podcasts from knitcast. or even think about our own lil' podcast...whee! back to the fun days of community radio...
c/o bust, microrevolt offers an awesome free program knitpro which translates any high res image into a graph which you can go craftin' crazy with. eerily genius.
the reason why the program is available is to encourage a little political naughtiness - it's very easy to throw a nice big companies logo into the program (hello gap, nike, and others busted in sweatshoparoonie) and knit a small act of resistance. however it's the thought of whacking in vintage fabric patterns or somesuch which has us all thrilled about it.
